KS4 Horticulture (BTEC)

Specification: BTEC Level 2 Horticulture (Pearson)

Course outline/what should students expect of the course?

Horticulture is the science of growing plants and gardening. It also includes aspects of garden design and commercial crop production. You will study plant science including experiments into the factors that affect plant growth and development. You will also grow a range of crops in the polytunnel and in outdoor beds. You will then sell these crops to raise funds for purchasing further resources for the course. The aim is to be self-financing and as sustainable as possible. This is a very practical course including sowing seeds, planting, weeding, harvesting, pruning and maintenance.

There is no examination for this course. There are written and practical assignments which are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction and together make up your final grade at the end of the course. Your folder will then be sent to the exam board for moderation.  Assessment outcomes:

Pass (GCSE equivalent C)

Merit (GCSE equivalent B)

Distinction (GCSE equivalent A)

Progression to Post-16

This is good progression to an apprenticeship in Land-Based Studies or a further Level 3 Horticulture course at Cirencester, Hartpury, Sparshalt or Lackham Colleges. Work experience and employment opportunities are available at Lechlade Garden Centre.
