Reading

learn at least 2000 new words every year *
  • read the word, hear the word and say the word in a sentence to show my understanding
  • explore the etymology of new words
read fluently in every subject
  • listen carefully when my teacher reads and follow along in the text with my ruler, pencil or finger
  • read out loud with expression if my teacher asks me to - this maybe in unison or in a pair
be able to answer questions about the texts I read
  • look for clues in the text like pictures, headings, graphs and tables
  • highlight a few key words and ideas as I read
  • be aware that I read differently in different subjects and contexts
*The number of words that students need to learn is exceedingly large; on average students should add 2,000 to 3,000 new words a year to their reading vocabularies (Beck, McKeown & Kucan, 2002).
