Year 6 into 7

Transition from year 6 into 7

At Farmor’s School we work hard to provide care, guidance and support for children and their families during their transition from primary to secondary school.

It is normal for all children to feel both excited and nervous about the transition to “big school”. Our transfer programme aims to support them as they approach this change in their lives, and to ensure that they arrive in year 7 full of curiosity about learning and with a sense of belonging to our Farmor’s community.

We look forward to welcoming you to Farmor’s School and will be pleased at any time to discuss the many educational and other opportunities provided for our students and the community we serve.

Transition: What is the process?

September/October
Open evening is held during September every year and takes place this year on Thursday 24th September 2026 - 4:30pm - 6:30pm. We encourage families to come and look around the school and talk to our range of departments, teachers and wonderful students.

31 October: Secondary school application closing date. Each year this is the closing date for families to submit their applications.

March
Beginning of March 2027:  Secondary school offer day. Each year, this is the date that families are told where their child will attend secondary school. Once you have accepted your place, you will receive a welcome email through Applicaa which is our year 6 enrolment platform. This is the beginning of your child’s journey with Farmor’s School!

Late May and June
Your child’s Head of Year will visit every primary school that has five or more children coming up to us. They will talk to the year 6 children about starting at Farmor’s and answer their questions.

Children at schools with less than five children will be invited to come to Farmor's to meet with us and to get to know other children who will be starting with them.

Our SENCO or one of our Higher Level Teaching Assistants will also visit some schools to discuss pupils on the SEN register and create a pupil profile outlining key support strategies which are additional to our Universal Offer, this will be shared with all class teachers on transition. We will invite you to attend an optional 1:1 drop-in session with one of our staff. This is a chance for you to get to know us better and ask us any questions.

Additional transition visits are offered to pupils on the SEN register or those who are particularly anxious. Dates are shared directly with primary schools who can share details with families.

Transition Days:  We invite all our new year 7 students to school for two days. They will meet the other children in their tutor groups, sample lessons, tour the school and understand how we learn and behave at Farmor’s School. Parents will be invited in on the evening of the second day to find out more about starting at Farmor’s School and you will be able to meet some of your child’s staff.

September
Starting Year 7

Your child will arrive in September knowing their Head of Year, their tutor group and their way around the school. They will come in a day earlier than the rest of the school to acclimatise.
